Deng Ke

Deng Ke is one of China's most famous contemporary landscape artists. His paintings have been displayed in the National Art Gallery in Beijing as well as in overseas galleries.

Deng Ke was born in Suzhou in 1936, and is famed particularly for his paintings of scenes from the town of his childhood, often referred to as the Venice of the East.

He was invited to study at the Research Institute of Chinese Painting, and his work was subsequently selected for inclusion in a 1986 UNESCO publication honouring China's most important contemporary artists.

An ancient Chinese proverb relates:

In heaven, there is Paradise
On Earth, Suzhou.
